Group addresses returning prisoners to society |

ILLINOIS - ALTON - Money could be saved, crime could be reduced and lives could be changed if more effort was spent on returning freed prison inmates into the community. So said a series of speakers on Saturday, as the United Congregations of Metro-East played host to "Freeing the Prisoner," a summit on helping citizens with their re-entry into society. A series of speakers addressed the idea of restorative justice, a philosophy whose goal is to reintegrate people who have fulfilled their prison sentences back into the community. Speakers included Michael Davis, director of re-entry, and Jane Otte, executive director, both with the Lutheran Social Services of Illinois; Capt. Scott Waldrup of the Alton Police Department; and Steve Wigginton, U.S. attorney for the Southern District of Illinois. Read More. |
