Norfolk Jail Aids Re-Entry

In the next six months, between 175 to 200 inmates currently serving time at the Norfolk City Jail will be released after serving six or more months for various offenses. Seventy-five percent of them do not have any form of state-issued identification.

On Monday (May 6), the Norfolk City Jail launched a program to help these men and women secure a state issued I.D. – a tool they will need to overcome the biggest barriers toward staying out of jail and becoming productive.

Through a partnership with the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV), the Norfolk City Jail will be the state’s first city jail to help inmates leaving the facility secure a state-issued photo identification card before they exit the system.

Lacking a state-issued I.D. is one of the barriers for ex-convicts seeking housing, employment or public assistance, such as food stamps, when re-entering society and becoming independent and functional.

Forty percent of those released from local and state prisons will return to jail within six months, having failed to secure employment to support themselves.
