ID card can help put inmates on path

Helping inmates get on their feet and - most importantly - stay on their feet once they leave jail benefits them and benefits their communities.

Getting a state-issued identification card is the first step in finding a job after jail - which is often the first step toward avoiding a return trip.

Norfolk's jail is the first local facility to implement a program begun this year by the state Department of Corrections to better prepare inmates for release and to assist in their transition. Through a partnership with the Department of Motor Vehicles, Norfolk jail staff help inmates obtain state-issued identification. Jails throughout the region and the rest of the state should follow.
