Local jail populations decreasing |

Numbers from the Georgia Department of Community Affairs show that county jails are less full than they were this time last year, and fewer inmates who have been sentenced are waiting to be moved to prison. Part of it is because of the Criminal Justice Reform Bill passed in 2012 that changed the criminal code for non-violent crimes such as burglary and forgery, said Floyd County Sheriff Tim Burkhalter. “A lot of non-violent crimes have been changes to misdemeanors,” he said.
