The ceremony is open to the public and comes on Peace Officers Memorial Day, held every year on May 15. The Washtenaw County Board of Commissioners also passed a resolution declaring the week of May 12 through May 18 as Police and Corrections Officer Week and May 15 as Peace Officers Memorial Day in Washtenaw County. The newly created Hall of Honor will serve to remember Leo Borders, Frank Compton, Harold Ewald and Jerry Russo, four sheriff’s deputies who lost their lives in the line of duty. Borders, 28, died on Aug. 3, 1966, in an automobile crash during a vehicle pursuit of four suspects, according to the Officer Down Memorial Page (ODMP). He worked for the sheriff’s office for two years before his death. Read More. |
