The death of a parole officer in Yellowknife, the capital of Canada's Northwest Territories, is being felt across the country. Louise Pargeter, 34, was found dead in the apartment of one of her clients on Wednesday. Police discovered the woman's body after she was reported overdue from a visit with one of her parole clients. News of the death spread quickly. "The news hit anyone who heard it like a ton of bricks," says Tim Krause, who speaks for Corrections Canada. "The department today has been informed right across the land, from coast to coast, of the tragic news and we are, to a person, in a deep state of mourning and profound sadness." After a chase on Highway Three, police arrested the tenant of the apartment Pargeter's body was found in. The man was driving a Corrections Canada vehicle. An RCMP spokesperson says charges are imminent. Pargeter is the first parole officer in the history of Corrections Canada to die while visiting a parolee in the community. In the last five years, 67 people have been killed in Canada by inmates on parole. |
