MARYLAND - CENTREVILLE - The Centreville Rotary Club on Thursday, May 16, awarded Officer First Class Timothy Michael Lewis of the Centreville Police Department the 23rd annual Sgt. Wallace J. Mowbray Memorial Award for Outstanding Law Enforcement Officer for Queen Anne's County. Lewis received the award for shooting an alleged gunman who escaped the county's Eastern Correctional Institution in August and threatened the lives of a family. The officer was selected from five other finalists and received the honor during a breakfast ceremony at Centreville United Methodist Church. “This law enforcement officer ... did stand in the gap between the criminal element and the citizens of our community and protected them against a villain,” said Rotary member Harold Reece, who explained how following a shootout with law enforcement, the escapee ran across a field to a farm house. “The understanding I have is, this officer arrived there and (the escapee) was just a distance from the family and their house. The officer stepped in between this family and this culprit (who) had his hands behind him and would not reveal his hands and he put the officer in the position where the officer had no choice but to do what he had to do to protect a family.” Read More. |
