Authorities searched across Georgia on Sunday for four inmates who escaped from a medium-security prison by cutting through a fence. Officials did not know if they were armed, but residents were urged to be cautious. One of the inmates had been convicted of manslaughter. The men were reported missing late Saturday from the Montgomery State Prison at Mount Vernon in southern Georgia. "Most of them are from the northwest corner of Georgia. We assume they may be heading back to that area, but we don't know," said Scheree Lipscomb, a Department of Corrections spokeswoman. Authorities believed they may have stolen a truck. Lipscomb said inmate Joshua J. Thompson, 19, was sentenced to 18 years for voluntary manslaughter; Joseph M. Lee Jr., 21, was serving at least 12 years for armed robbery and other offenses; Micah D. Sheer, 22, was serving 17 years for aggravated assault and burglary; and Tracy O. Mullins, 30, was serving at least three years for firearms possession and other offenses. |
