Inmate in N.H. jumps to his death

A state prison inmate who feared he was going to be transferred to the prison in upstate Berlin, N.H. killed himself, the man's widow said.
Ronald Turgeon, 59, jumped from a balcony Thursday and fell about 30 or 40 feet to his death at the Concord prison, Corrections Department spokesman Jeff Lyons said.
Turgeon had served nearly 15 years of a 10- to 30-year sentence for sexually assaulting a young girl.
Turgeon's widow, Luisa, said her that husband told her a corrections officer told him he was going to be transferred to Berlin and that he panicked. Lyons said he did not know whether an officer had made the comment, but he said Turgeon was not scheduled to go to Berlin.
Luisa Turgeon said her husband did not want to be transferred north, because he wouldn't be able to see her as much.
Last year, when housed at Berlin, Turgeon tried to kill himself by drinking windshield washer fluid. He was sent back to Concord and treated in a psychiatric unit before being sent back to a medium-security section of the prison.
Turgeon suffered post-traumatic stress after service in Vietnam and was very depressed while in Berlin last year, his wife said.
Mrs. Turgeon said she was upset that the prison didn't monitor her husband more closely, especially after the earlier suicide attempt.
Lyons said he could not comment on any psychiatric care that Turgeon had received or whether he was considered a suicide threat. Lyons said that the prison is investigating, but that no foul play is suspected.
Lyons said records show that Turgeon was supposed to be transferred to a halfway house as soon as space became available in either Concord or Manchester.
