| Kosher meals fight continues |

Florida's Department of Corrections got a stern rebuke from the Eleventh Circuit Court of Appeals last week when the court sent a lawsuit brought by a Jewish prisoner over the right to receive kosher meals back to a lower court. The appeals court remanded the case to the federal district court that dismissed the 2012 lawsuit filed by inmate Bruce Rich, an Orthodox Jew. Florida's DOC argued in the appeal that denying Jewish prisoners a kosher diet was necessary to control costs and maintain security. The appeals court ruled that evidence submitted by the DOC to support its position was "insubstantial." At least 35 states and the federal government provide kosher meals to inmates and the Eleventh Circuit Court of Appeals said the DOC made only "meager efforts to explain why Florida's prisons are so different from the penal institutions that now provide kosher meals such that the plans adopted by those other institutions would not work in Florida."
