Deputies with the Jackson County (Miss.) Sheriff's Department on last Sunday scoured an area near the fairgrounds and near the jail in an attempt to capture two Jackson County Adult Detention Center inmates. Jackson County Sheriff Mike Byrd said the two escapes happened at separate locations but at nearly the same time on Sunday. At about 12:30 p.m., inmate Trustee Kevin Marshall Tackett, 32, of 10341 Riverview Dr., Biloxi, was working at the fairgrounds as part of the cleanup crew following Saturday night's Jackson County Sheriff's Department Rodeo. "He asked to use the restroom and didn't come back," Byrd said. While deputies began looking for Tackett, Charles Anthony "Pee Wee" Barnes, 29, of 3610 Marie St., Pascagoula, was climbing the fence at the Jackson County Adult Detention Center. Maj. Randy McClendon, at the adult detention center, said Barnes escaped after fellow inmate James Capels gave him a foot up. Capels, he said, had also planned to go over the fence but was stopped by deputies. "There's no one guarding the other side of the fence," McClendon said. "So by the time we stopped Capels and got to the other side, Barnes was gone. A part of his (Barnes) jumper was left hanging from the fence." Byrd said deputies and three K-9 officers searched both areas for about 1-1/2 hours Sunday. McClendon and jail staff also looked at video tape and listened to the taped telephone conversations of both inmates, hoping to get clues as to their eventual location. Information about the escape, physical descriptions and photographs of Tackett and Barnes have also been relayed to all area law enforcement agencies. |
