The month of May so far isn't turning out to be a public-relations bonanza for private prisons.

Early in the month, to mark its 30th anniversary, the Nashville-based Corrections Corporation of America was heading into a weeklong stretch of celebrations.

And then party crashers showed up - an assortment of civil rights leaders, people from the faith community, former inmates and criminal justice reform groups, which staged protests from Washington, D.C., to Tucson.
