Police say an elderly woman was held hostage by an escapee who simply walked away from a prison training program. Cops say 42-year-old Louis Cortalano walked away from a prison work program at the Hudson Hills Golf Course in New Castle, N.Y.. Police are currently investigating how he was able to escape. About four hours later, police caught the prisoner. The woman, who was held at knife point, was not injured. Police say Cortalano was serving an eight-month sentence for stealing china and flatware at the Macy's department store in White Plains. After his arraignment in New Castle he will be brought back to the county jail in Valhalla. The Westchester Department of Corrections indefinitely suspended the work release program for its inmates on Wednesday night. |
