NORTH CAROLINA - The Laurinburg-Scotland County Area Chamber of Commerce led efforts to form a Scotland County Reentry Council in December of 2010. Since then, the council has held monthly meetings of service providers and other interested citizens. Council members have learned the scope of the issues faced by formerly incarcerated people and familiarized themselves with the resources available to help them successfully return to the community. The council visited Scotland Correctional Institution on several occasions. Guest speakers have included representatives from Community Success Initiative, Inmates to Entrepreneurs, The Hidden Workforce and Richmond Community College. This existing council and the dedication of its members was instrumental in having our area selected as one of five reentry councils in the state to receive funding from the legislature. The tri-county area including Scotland, Hoke and Robeson counties will soon have a local reentry coordinator and a local job placement specialist, who will help formerly incarcerated individuals find the resources they need for a successful return to their communities.
