County considers paying ex-cons to work |

BAKERSFIELD, CA - Ex-cons may soon be paid to work for the county. It's a proposal offered by the Parks Department to help with staffing shortages and recidivism. However, some aren't that keen on coughing up county cash to former criminals. The program would give individuals work experience in the parks, mowing lawns and picking up trash so ex-inmates turn to a life of work not a life of crime. In the last six years, the county Parks Department nearly cut its staff in half from 201 full and part-time employees in 2007 to about 106 today.
