INDIANA - Warrick County Superior Judge Keith Meier said the traditional approach of treating drug addiction by incarceration was a “monumental failure.”

Meier said that this is the reason drug courts were created.

Nine graduates of the Warrick County Drunk Driving and Drug Court completed their final step in the program on Thursday, May 23 during a ceremony at the Warrick Education Center.

Meier said that the Department of Corrections sees a recidivism rate of drug abusers as high as 80 percent.

For those who have graduated from drug court, recidivism is as low as 10 percent.

“People are much better than the choices they make,” he said. “All of these people are good people.”

Since August 2007, 13 graduating classes have passed through the drug court.
