Powder in inmate's letter prompts emergency response

Published: 10/11/2004

An unknown powder in a letter mailed to the Connecticut Post forced an emergency response to the newspaper's headquarters in Bridgeport.
Police, firefighters and the FBI were called to the building yesterday afternoon after a reporter opened a letter from a prison inmate and powder fell out.
The state police bomb squad collected the powder, put it in a lead container and brought it in for testing. Results are expected by Sunday.
There was no order to evacuate the building, but people exposed to the powder were asked to take a long shower and save their clothes for possible future testing.
The return address on the letter indicated that it was sent by an inmate at the Cheshire Correctional Institution.
