| Michigan House approves indefinite use of retired corrections officers |

LANSING — The Michigan House voted 58-51 on Wednesday to approve a bill that would indefinitely allow retired corrections officers to return to work part time, while still receiving their pensions. House Bill 4664 would remove the Sept. 30 end date on a law passed late last year. It still needs approval from the Michigan Senate. The 2012 law aimed to save $10 million over a full year by hiring up to 250 retired officers, who would reduce the agency’s rising overtime costs. Republican lawmakers said the Michigan Department of Corrections needs more time to recruit eligible retirees. As of May 22, six retirees were working in state prisons, with 18 more in the process of returning to work. Read More. |
