Despite last-minute efforts by his attorneys to win a stay, convicted killer Edward Green, III was executed just after 6 p.m. last Tuesday in the Texas death chamber in Huntsville. Earlier in the day, Gov. Rick Perry denied Green's request for a 30-day reprieve. Green contended he "did the best I could with what I had" and said he had no hate in his heart or bitterness, adding to his family and the relatives of his victims, quote, "I can only apologize for all the pain I caused you. May God forgive us on this day." As the lethal drugs began taking effect, Green wheeze and grimaced. He said something unintelligible and gasped. Ten minutes later at 8:21 p.m. CDT, he was pronounced dead. Green's mother sobbed uncontrollably as she watched her son die. She collapsed and had to be assisted from the room. A second witness was placed in a wheelchair briefly. Greens attorneys, two state senators and the Houston police chief wanted the governor to halt the execution of Harris County death row inmates until recently discovered boxes of evidence can be reviewed. Green's attorneys argued that problems in the Houston crime lab could have affected the inmate's case. They took the case to the U.S. Supreme Court last Tuesday afternoon after the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals refused their request for a stay. Green was sentenced to die for the murders of a 72-year-old man and a 63-year-old woman during a robbery in Houston 12 years ago. The victims were in a car at a stoplight when Green approached, demanded money and then opened fire after they were slow to comply. |
