State corrections officials are investigating the death of an inmate at the Baltimore, Md. women's detention center and the treatment she received in the days before she died. Doctors at the University of Maryland Medical Center, where Deborah Epifanio was treated, say they know what killed her -- cryptococcal meningitis, which is fatal within a few weeks in about 20 percent of the cases. Whether she received timely care while at the women's detention center, however, is being investigated. Family members say they weren't told of her dire condition until the day before she died. The departmental investigator handling the case declined to comment. Autopsy results might not be available for weeks. |
