MIAMI (AP) - Florida officials are assuring a federal judge and the U.S. Department of Justice that a kosher diet alternative will be offered in all state prisons by the end of this year. A top Department of Corrections official testified at a hearing Tuesday that the program following Jewish dietary rules will start in July at Union Correctional Institution in north Florida. It'll gradually expand to 60 facilities. The Justice Department wants a federal judge to issue an order requiring kosher meals so that state officials won't reverse the policy as they did in 2007.
