Fired prison boss on trial in 2010 death of inmate |

A fired Alabama prison supervisor is set to go on trial today, accused of severely beating an inmate and then covering it up after the prisoner died. Two former prison employees have already pleaded guilty to federal charges in the Aug. 4, 2010, beating death of Rocrast Mack. But former Lt. Michael Smith faces the most serious charges. They normally could result in the death penalty, but prosecutors have said the maximum they will seek is life in prison if they get a conviction. According to the guilty pleas, Mack was hit repeatedly with a baton and stomped while in a prison office and while handcuffed in the infirmary. Mack, 24, was serving a 20-year sentence for a drug conviction at the Ventress Correctional Facility in southeast Alabama. Prison records described him as 5-foot-11 and 160 pounds. Read More. |
