What they're really cooking in the kitchen at Lutheran Metropolitan Ministry is hope and dignity. In a tasteful departure from the usual slop served when felons try to secure a second chance in the working world, the nonprofit, grass-roots social service agency is serving up a hearty portion of help to ease the transition from prison to employment, teaching ex-cons the culinary arts -- everything from searing duck to deep-frying dessert. Bryan Mauk, director of social enterprise at the ministry, told Plain Dealer reporter Michael O'Malley that one resume ingredient is essential for every participant in its latest job initiative: they must have a criminal background.
