44 complete prison program

NEW ORLEANS (AP) - A vocational-training program designed to help prisoners stay out of prison once they are released graduated 44 class members this past week at Orleans Parish prison.

Sheriff Marlin Gusman tells The Times-Picayune (http://bit.ly/11APht5 ) the program has achieved some success in keeping graduates out of prison.

Statistics released by Gusman's office show the program - which is open to inmates who are within 18 months of release - is believed to have contributed to a 12% reduction in the rate of recidivism in 2011.

Only 13.6% of graduates of the program ended up returning to prison, the sheriff says.
