INDIANA - When Sara Hilsmeyer was growing up, her mother thought she would make a great accountant. She did love numbers, after all. But Hilsmeyer had another, much different plan for her future.

“I don’t ever remember not wanting to be a police officer,” Hilsmeyer said.

She admired her cousin, an Indiana state trooper who introduced her to the law-enforcement field. While the plethora of police shows on television didn’t exist then like it does today and women in the field were even more of a rarity, Hilsmeyer was certain of her calling.

Now, she is a crime-scene technician in her 20th year at the Evansville Police Department, and at 42 years old, she still enjoys the career path she aspired to all those years ago.
