Advocating for 'earned review' for juvenile offenders |

As a businessman and a fiscal conservative, I’m known as a “law and order” person. There need to be accountability and consequences for anti-social behavior (crime). However, some of our public safety laws for juveniles simply need to be changed. I was given the opportunity to serve on the bipartisan Public Safety Commission without any preconceived ideas of policy solutions. I found out Oregon can be proud of its public safety system in general. The state’s violent crime has decreased since 1995; in fact, Oregon has one of the best decreases in the 50 states. However, the way we deal with young offenders by locking them up under mandatory sentencing is the piece of the public safety puzzle that is very troubling to me. Read More. |
