New law will give Indiana judges power to decide where to house juvenile offenders |

INDIANAPOLIS — Juveniles convicted of all but the most serious crimes could soon be able to remain in juvenile correctional facilities, even after they are sentenced in court as adults. Rep. Wendy McNamara, R-Mount Vernon, authored the new law, which will prevent minors from automatically going to adult prisons when they’ve been convicted in adult court. Instead, judges will have new authority to determine where they should be placed. "This bill gives (judges), at the sentencing phase, the option of suspending (juvenile) adult conviction(s) in favor of continued juvenile placement," said Mike Dempsey, the Indiana Department of Corrections executive director of youth services.
