Published: 06/22/2013

The Connecticut Department of Correction and the Connecticut State Police are investigating the suicide of an inmate at the Macdougall-Walker Correctional Institution.

At approximately 7:57 p.m. on Friday June 21, 2013, correctional staff conducting routine tours observed an inmate unresponsive in his cell with a ligature tied around his neck. The other end of the ligature was secured to the top bunk. He was the only inmate in the cell at the time.

Correctional and medical staff immediately initiated emergency and life saving measures. The inmate was transported to St. Francis Hospital where he was pronounced dead at 8:58 p.m.

The inmate is identified as 52-year-old Luis Rodriguez of New Britain. He was an unsentenced inmate with pending charges of Sexual Assault 1st degree. Inmate Rodriguez had been incarcerated at the Macdougall-Walker Correctional Institution since August 1, 2012.

The exact manner and cause of death will be determined by the State Medical Examiner’s Office.
