Community of faith column: Helping ex-cons buck the odds aids more than society

MONTANA - Having no job or place to live, having no friends that are a positive influence and no family (or no family that wants anything to do with you) having little to no money, limited education, recovering from an addiction, dealing with a mental health issue and in a community that is unfamiliar to you is often the reality of those coming out of prison.

Over the years state departments of corrections, private citizens and faith communities have worked independently and sometimes together to try and provide a more reasonable means of transition back into society for those who have served their time behind bars.

Recognizing that habits and patterns of living die hard and that everyone needs somebody and a another chance; a parachute for re-entry is needed especially into a world that in many ways has changed and continues to change at an ever increasing rate. A successful transition is vital or a crash and burn scenario is set up and the person is back in prison and another cycle starts over again with an additional failure to deal with.
