| Teen Court puts justice in hands of offenders’ peers |

FLORIDA - On a recent Tuesday afternoon, just before the end of the business day, a group of about 20 teenagers filed into the empty second-floor courtroom of Circuit Judge Willard Pope. The defendant slid behind the desk and faced the bench as the jury members found their seats. But instead of Judge Pope, Assistant State Attorney Victoria Grimes took the bench. The 17-year-old defendant was accompanied by her mother instead of counsel. The jury members were her peers, all younger than 20, who might be sympathetic to the girl’s case.
