Safety concerns Ohio prison officers

Richland Correctional Institution is one of five prisons in the Ohio's northern region that will be under new management this month.
The Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction announced Wednesday that Trumbull Correctional Institution Warden Julius Wilson has been appointed RiCI warden after Norman Rose's demotion this month.
The state cited a host of issues in demoting Rose, including a lack of confidence in his judgment.
Corrections officers continued to voice concerns Tuesday about officer and public safety amid short staffing.
RiCI Acting Warden Richard Hall said an incident Tuesday night after an officer captain stopped a tackle football game and ordered the yard cleared was not as dangerous as officers reported and had nothing to do with short staffing.
Hall said the shift actually had six more officers than usual, which the union attributes to forced transfers to second shift.
Some officers reported the incident prompted jeering and inmates throwing rocks and mud at officers.
Hall said the shift captain stopped the game near dark, when the recreation yard usually closes, because it appeared to be getting rough -- touch football is permitted but tackling is against the rules.
He said several dozen inmates gathered around the captain to protest but dispersed without incident. He said the captain then ordered the yard closed because it was getting dark.
