New Louisville Metro Corrections online system leaves some inmates stuck in jail

A new $1.5 million Metro Corrections computer system designed to give the public easy access to inmates online — including mug shots, charges, future court dates and bond amounts — has had a problematic start, resulting in some prisoners being held past their assigned release dates.

Once the XJail System is fully operational, officials say it will not only provide the public better information, but save the jail time and money in fielding telephone calls.

“People are going to love it,” Metro Corrections Chief Mark Bolton said. “This thing is going to be really, really cool. There has been a little bit of pain in getting there ... but everybody is going to benefit.”

But getting the system operational has proved to be a challenge, causing multiple problems in recent weeks — resulting in inmates remaining in Metro Corrections for as much as two days after they were supposed to have been released.

The system failures have also resulted in other inmates not being brought over for court or not receiving work release until several days after a judge’s order.
