WORCESTER, Mass. -- Spectrum Health Systems, Inc. was recently awarded a $48,211 grant from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services' Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) for its outpatient opioid treatment program's electronic health record (EHR) continuity of care implementation and upgrade project. "Treatment programs for people with opioid addictions must be able to exchange essential health care information in order to provide their patients with comprehensive, effective care," said SAMHSA Administrator Pamela S. Hyde. "This grant will help develop the state-of-the-art information systems which improve patient care and the likelihood of full recovery." The one-year grant will help Spectrum implement and upgrade a certified EHR system designed to improve the quality and convenience of patient care, increase patient participation in their care, improve health outcomes, improve care coordination, and increase practical efficiencies and cost savings. "Besides fulfilling patient needs, the certified EHR system will address regulatory audit and other requirements, and meet Spectrum's need for medication dispensing, billing, and clinical records," said Spectrum's director of technology, Jason Montville. Starting this year, health care providers can obtain incentive bonuses for using EHR and meeting Medicare EHR incentive program requirements. The program encourages health care providers to adopt and meaningfully use certified EHR technology by 2014 or face Medicare payment reductions. |
