A suspended state corrections officer accused of flashing his badge to coerce sex from prostitutes in Burlington County is facing new charges after authorities discovered another apparent victim who was not a prostitute. Juan R. Stevens, 50, of Burlington Township, was named in a 25-count indictment made public Wednesday. Charges include sexual assault, misconduct, coercion, and extortion. The charges come from a DNA sample officials took after Stevens was arrested in March. His DNA reportedly matched that taken from a woman who said she was sexually assaulted in May 2011 at a Mansfield motel where she was living. It's the first time a person has been charged using DNA collected under a law that took effect in February, requiring genetic samples from all suspects charged with violent crimes, not just those convicted, according to the Attorney General's Office. Stevens, who is free on $200,000 bail, is suspended without pay. He was a senior corrections officer in Trenton, earning $80,396, and had worked for the state for 24 years, officials said. "It is abhorrent that a state correction officer would corruptly use his badge to sexually assault women in the manner alleged in this indictment," Acting Attorney General John J. Hoffman said in a statement announcing the indictment. "His alleged conduct is a complete betrayal of the trust placed in him as a public servant." Read More. |
