CALIFORNIA - A juvenile detention center, or "juvie," is a secure residential facility for young people, awaiting court hearings or placement in long-term facilities and programs. Juveniles go through a separate court system than adults, the juvenile court. The court sentences or commits juveniles to a certain program or facility. The United States incarcerates more youth than any other country in the world, a reflection of larger incarceration practices in the United States. Last year 126,000 juveniles were incarcerated in youth detention facilities and about 500,000 youth were brought to detention centers. Despite the growing numbers of incarcerated youth, education is universally considered to be the cornerstone of youth rehabilitation. In 1981 the landmark case of Green v. Johnson gave way to juveniles receiving their educational rights while incarcerated. Green v. Johnson ruled that youth have the right to an education even though they are incarcerated. Each state manages education differently, some schools within juvenile detention facilities are decentralized, some are centralized and run by school districts, and others are overseen by a state education agency.
