The Missouri Department of Corrections, South Central Correctional Center, and The Animal Shelter of Texas County all play a vital part in making up the Healing Paws program. The third annual Healing Paws graduation ceremony was held Tuesday, July 2, in the South Central Correctional Center visiting room. The Healing Paws program is the local version of Puppies for Parole. Puppies for Parole is an amazing program where the Department of Corrections partners with local animal shelters. Selected offenders then volunteer as animal trainers to take these unwanted dogs from shelters and teach them basic obedience and socialization and rehabilitate the animals so that they may be adopted into their forever homes. It is a true win-win situation for all involved. After opening prayer by Chaplain Michael Walker, SCCC Warden Michael Bowersox welcomed everyone and told a little bit about getting the program started in the Licking facility.
