Nobody ever got elected by promising to be soft on crime, but sometime in the not too distant future a variation of that pledge might be an appropriate campaign slogan. According to a story in Friday's Wichita Eagle, the Kansas prison system is full, and the state is predicted to get another 2,100 inmates in the next decade. Speaking in Wichita, Kansas Department of Corrections Secretary Ray Roberts said if the state wants to avoid spending millions on new prison beds, things have to change. Roberts noted that the most common reasons people end up in prison are drug abuse and mental illness. Sixty-six percent of inmates are drug abusers and 38 percent are mentally ill. "We're the largest provider in the state for the mentally ill population," Roberts said. Read More. |
