One of four inmates who escaped from a south Georgia prison over the weekend was wounded during a burglary attempt in Birmingham, Ala., and has been captured, a state Department of Corrections spokeswoman said Monday. Tracy O. Mullins, 30, who was serving at least three years for firearms possession and other offenses, was in the intensive care unit at the University of Alabama at Birmingham hospital after being shot Monday morning, said Scheree Lipscomb, the corrections department spokeswoman. The other fugitives were with Mullins but escaped, Lipscomb said. She said Mullins was not identified until later in the day. Mullins was shot by the person who lived at the residence, Lipscomb said. She did not know the identity of the resident and did not have details of Mullins' condition. The men, who were serving time for offenses from manslaughter to armed robbery, escaped from medium-security Montgomery State Prison on Saturday in Mt. Vernon by cutting a hole through a security fence. Mt. Vernon is 149 miles southeast of Atlanta. Earlier, officials said the men may have left the area in a stolen truck. The men are from northwest Georgia, Lipscomb said. |
