Dozens of female inmates in Utah released early to ease crowding

Over the past nine months, the Utah Board of Pardons and Parole gave early releases to dozens of women to ease crowding at the Utah State Prison.

In July, the number of women released from prison nearly doubled compared to previous months and many of those inmates — 21 of 74 women — were released after "special attention reviews" requested by the Utah Department of Corrections.

A spike in release of female inmates The number of special attention reviews granted by the Utah Board of Pardons and Parole skyrocketed in the first half of the year as prison officials sought to reduce the number of female inmates. Such reviews are typically requested for inmates who have completed programming or who may be eligible for release due to good behavior.
