New study reveals high recidivism rate in Delaware

WILMINGTON — A new study that revealed a more-than 70 percent recidivism rate for released offenders serving sentences of one year or more is raising more questions than answers, state officials said.

The Delaware Criminal Justice Council unveiled ”Recidivism in Delaware: An Analysis of Prisoners Released in 2008 and 2009” Wednesday per an examination mandated by legislation passed in 2011 that called for an annual report of recidivism rates.

In the language of Senate Bill 226, this study, the first of its kind since 2000, is to tri-annually examine rearrest, reconviction and recommitment rates as a springboard to causes of recidivism.
