Murders prompt review at Michigan Department of Corrections |

LANSING (WKZO) -- After the state Department of Corrections lost track of a registered sex offender who is accused in a double murder, the department is reviewing ways to update its procedures. Lavere Bryant was released from the Ionia Correctional Facility in 2011. Since his release, Bryant has never checked in with police as required by law. Reportedly, prison officials neglected to change information on the state's sex offender registry that would have alerted police to the fact that Bryant was no longer behind bars. He now faces charges of first degree murder in the July killings of 20-year-olds Brenna Machus and Joseph Orlando, both employees at a Family Dollar Store in Dearborn. Read More. |
