Prision museum might help us avoid repeat of history

Let’s face it. The notion of a museum dedicated, even in part, to the horrors of New Mexico’s prison riot is creepy.

In 1980, inmates at the Old Main prison killed 33 of their fellow prisoners as riots engulfed the penitentiary. Evil ran wild, with beheadings, burned bodies and amputations among the atrocities committed. For 36 hours, the inmates rioted, with 100 other prisoners and guards held hostage.

Today, the Old Main is shut down. It was one of the worst prison riots in U.S. history.

During the celebration of New Mexico’s centennial as a state, though, the notion came up to conduct tours of the now-shuttered prison. The first set of tours — one a month — were booked within three days. A second tour a month sold out within a week. It is clear, says Corrections Secretary Gregg Marcantel, that people are interested in what happened at the Old Main.
