DOC reports increase in inmate graduates

More South Dakota prison inmates completed their General Educational Development program and other course work this fiscal year compared to last, according to the state Department of Corrections.

Between July 1, 2012, and June 30, 2013, 229 state prison inmates earned their GED compared to 167 the previous fiscal year.

“Not having a high school education or GED is a stumbling block for post-high school education and employment and a barrier to successful reentry for offenders,” said Secretary of Corrections Denny Kaemingk said in a statement. “The Department of Corrections is committed to maximizing opportunities for their rehabilitation.”
