Modular jail cells expected at Dutchess Jail by early next year |

POUGHKEEPSIE – Dutchess County officials hope to have all of the approvals in place shortly so that they can install temporary modular jail cells, or pods, at the current jail site in Poughkeepsie. The hope is that can reduce the county’s need to house out inmates at other county jails and thus save millions in costs. County Budget Director Valerie Sommerville said plans are moving forward to have those additional portable cells in place within the next few months. “We are continuing to develop our site plan with Proteus, the POD vendor, and within the next month hope to have agreements in place with both the [state] Commission on Corrections and Proteus and have pods in place by the first quarter of 2014,” Sommerville said. The county is currently studying its options for a new jail with the county’s Criminal Justice Council recommending the county purchase the former Hudson River Psychiatric Center property for construction of a new jail and related counseling facilities designed to reduce recidivism of inmates.
