Two escapees from a halfway house in Great Falls, Mont. led deputies here on a 106-mile-long, high-speed chase Thursday morning before being arrested just north of West Yellowstone. T.J. "Otto" Meyer, 24, and Shane Thomas Paull, 20, remain in Gallatin County's jail. They are being held on a variety of charges, including escape. Both men will be arraigned today in Justice Court. Gallatin County sheriff's deputies spotted a suspicious vehicle at the Cameron Bridge fishing access west of Bozeman at about 3 a.m. Officers soon learned the car had been reported stolen in Great Falls. Meyer, who was apparently the driver of the Ford Escort, drove the vehicle from the fishing access when officers approached. He then led officers on a high-speed chase heading west. Three sheriff's deputies were soon on his tail and Madison County deputies used spike strips in an attempt to disable the stolen vehicle in McAllister. Despite that, the pursuit continued for several miles as Meyer headed south on U.S. Highway 287 through Ennis. Then 12 miles west of the U.S. Highway 191 intersection, just north of West Yellowstone, officers used spike strips again to disable the vehicle. This time, Meyer lost control and wrecked the vehicle. The chase covered 106 miles, according to sheriff's reports. Meyer and Paull had been reported missing from the Department of Corrections Pre-Release Center Wednesday at about 11 a.m., Sally Hilander, public information officer at the DOC, said Thursday. |
