D.C. jail chaplain received national award

A 40-year veteran and current chaplain of the D.C. jail has been selected by the Salvation Army as chaplain of the year.

Betty Green, 68, who started working with the D.C. Department of Corrections in 1973, received the award Tuesday during the American Correctional Association’s annual summer conference at the Gaylord National Resort at the National Harbor, officials said.

Green, who also serves as assistant to the pastor at Mount Olive Baptist Church in Northeast Washington, was named chaplain of the jail in 2003. Green has been credited with developing a program at the jail which helps inmates who are preparing for release, to find housing, employment and education opportunities.
