TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) - Changes are coming when it comes to crime and incarceration. The crime rate is dropping while the incarceration rate is increasing. The United States has 5% of the world's population but 25% of the world's prisoners. It's the result of nearly four decades of "Get Tough on Crime." But whether the get tough policies have caused the drop in crime is in dispute. It's likely at least a contributing factor but probably not the only one and whether it's even a major contributor, studies don't bear that out either. There's no doubt violent offenders belong in prison, but many agree, too many people convicted of low level, non violent crimes are clogging the prisons. Read More. |
