| Prison education programs significantly reduce odds of re-offending, new study indicates |

LANSING -- A new study of the effectiveness of prison education programs has revealed that prisoners who participate in studying while incarcerated have much lower odds of re-offending. The study, conducted by the RAND Corporation on behalf of the federal Bureau of Justice Assistance, analyzed a number of research studies conducted on correctional education to determine if educational programs are effective in reducing crime and rehabilitating inmates. The research indicates that an inmate who participates in an educational program while in prison has 43 percent lower odds of reoffending, which translates to a 13 percent lower risk of reoffending compared to an inmate who does not participate in educational programs.
