LANCASTER, Ohio — Next week, Tray Burton will turn 21 in prison, but he won’t be there forever. Like 98 percent of all inmates in Ohio prisons, Burton will eventually come home. Preparing Burton and thousands of other offenders to return to family, jobs and society is the focus of “Reintegration Units” such as the one that opened yesterday at the Southeastern Correctional Facility near Lancaster. A renovated dorm at the prison houses 268 inmates who agree to maintain a busy eight- to 10-hours-a-day schedule of work, training and classes, all in preparation for the real world they will face when released.
