| Lawmakers pass bill that addresses overcrowding at Riverview |

AUGUSTA — The Maine Legislature on Thursday took steps toward solving overcrowding and understaffing problems at the state's Riverview Psychiatric Center. Lawmakers passed LD 1515, a bill first offered by Gov. Paul LePage in May, that expands available resources by adding 14 mental health workers to a 32-bed mental health unit inside the state prison in Warren. The House approved the bill by a vote of 115-8, while the Senate passed the measure 32-0. Prior to passage, the bill was significantly amended, limiting who could be sent to the prison facility. It creates a special legislative oversight committee that will continue to work on finding deeper solutions to a host of patient and employee safety issues identified in a recent federal audit of the 92-bed Riverview facility in Augusta.
